TORONTO - On February 25th, 2020 our team at Threshold Images had the pleasure of being invited by WestJet to tour their newest fleet addition, 787-9 #4 (C-GKKN/905). During this tour our team was able to snap photos and check out every inch inside and outside of the brand new aircraft to the airlines fleet.

The airline placed an order for 10 aircraft with options for 10 more. The order is firm for 10 aircraft to enter into the fleet by 2021 with the options for 10 additional to be delivered by 2024.

WestJet has decided to open up to an entirely different market, now flying some very intriguing trans-atlantic routes such as Calgary-Paris, Calgary-Dublin and the already established Toronto-Gatwick route. These are just a few examples of the adventurous expansion plan which sees this carrier now looking to become and international airline. With an expansion like this in mind, WestJet will be relying heavily on their brand new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners which have now brought Canadians an excellent product which has become a huge topic of conversation in the airline industry. We had the chance to experience what all the talk is about, so lets check out the WestJet 787-9 from back to front.

During our tour of the airlines brand new aircraft, we had the chance to view and sit in their economy seats which range from the back of the aircraft to the premium economy cabin. The economy cabin features 276 seats in a 3-3-3 configuration.

The cabin ranges from row 9 all the way back to row 40, featuring 57 extra-legroom seats which when booking are colored in green. Economy features a northern lights inspired mood lighting to create ambiance centered around your well-being. Pillows, blankets and complimentary food and beverages will be provided however, your experience may differ based on whether you're on a domestic or international flight.

Aircraft Features

The WestJet Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner offers the biggest window size in the airlines fleet, offering the ability for a brighter cabin and more space to enjoy the beautiful Canadian landscape. The windows are also dimmable at the touch of a button, to allow you to have control over your own space. The new airplane is also more humid and reduces the dryness in your throat and eyes, an interesting touch bent on creating a more comfortable experience for you and I.

Cabin pressure levels are designed to make it easier to breathe and also reduce jet lag for passengers, along with new smart sensors to easily detect incoming turbulence and reduce motion sickness. A much quieter air conditioner has been installed in the new 787-9 which reduces vibrations and softens the engine noise.

Passengers who frequently fly with WestJet will be all the more comfortable flying in the 787-9 premium economy cabin. The cabin features 28 seats with four-way adjustable headrests, in a 2-3-2 configuration.
